Yellow Sky

Picture
See it – A good psychological western starring Gregory Peck and Richard Widmark.  After robbing a bank, the only option for a gang of outlaws is to trek across the brutal desert toward the town of “Yellow Sky.”  When they arrive, they find themselves in the middle of a ghost town, inhabited only by a girl and her grandfather.  Things get testy between the men when they begin to suspect that the old man and the girl are hiding something. This is an intriguing movie with all the ingredients for a compelling western.  Plus, it has a unique story, a horseback chase, and couple decent gunfights.  3 action rating

See it- A very average action movie, and a very average overall movie.  But while nothing really makes it stand out, it’s still an enjoyable western.  Starring Clint Walker in one of his earliest lead roles, it’s the story of a fur trapper who is forced to heal a wounded squaw in exchange for his life.  But when they fall in love, the jealous Indian chief is none too happy.  He must not only fight for her, but he must protect a naïve cavalry unit that thinks they can take on the whole Sioux tribe.  A great final Indian battle, but most of the movie is slow and talky. Still, it’s a good, old-fashioned, feel-good western.  3 action rating.

You Can't Win 'Em All

Picture
This equivalent to a “buddy war movie,” and it's really a pointless film.  There’s no action until an hour in.  Then there’s three quick battles via train, airplane, and boat…the end.  Tony Curtis and Charles Bronson share a pretty enjoyable on-screen chemistry as soldiers of fortune that join the Turkish Civil War.  But when it’s all said and done, you’ll know just how appropriate the title of the movie really is.  2.5 action rating.

Young Billy Young

Picture
“Somebody came to town.” Robert Mitchum plays a town-cleaning sheriff with a haunted past.  This western has its moments, but I’d hesitate to call it a classic.  The recycled plot has been done a hundred times in detail, even down to the training of the young deputy to be the sheriff’s successor.  And the music is downright awful. You take a good soundtrack for granted until you hear a really bad one.  I admit this is a decent quality western, but it’s also an unmemorable one. 3 action rating.

See it – This is a uniquely gritty and depressing war drama.  Notice I said drama.  This is an entirely too-long movie that has just enough action to keep you interested.  It has three battle scenes, but then again it is a three hour movie.  The ratio of talking to fighting is not satisfactory for it to be called a great action movie.  Having said that, it is still a great movie.  Marlon Brando plays a “nice nazi” and is phenomenal in his role as usual.  The other two main characters are Americans played by Dean Martin and Montgomery Clift.  The movie is about the separate stories of these three men.  Eventually, all three of their paths cross.  A pretty cool idea for a cool war drama.  Brando looks cool in his aviators too.  3 action rating
