The Far Country

Like most Jimmy Stewart westerns, this is another classic.  It’s not as action packed as some of the rest, but that's because, in this one, he’s a gold miner in Alaska.  There are different kinds of dangers he faces along the way.  This one’s got a lot of familiar faces and is a great adventure tale. 2.5 action rating

The Fighting Kentuckian

Picture
Not an action movie, this goofy box office flop co-stars Oliver Hardy (“Laurel and Hardy”).  I would compare it more to “Donovan’s Reef” and Wayne’s “comedies” more than his good westerns.  I found myself fast forwarding through parts of this because its just painful to watch.  The plot is an uninteresting tale about Kentucky militia in the 1800’s that for some reason are helping out French families who have been banished to Louisiana.  It has one battle at the very end and its not worth the wait.  1 action rating

The Fighting Seabees

Picture
See it –In a nutshell, it’s the story of a group of construction workers in World War 2 who are contracted to build airfields in the Pacific.  But when the Japanese invade their island, they are forced to help fight.  They are a Construction Battalion, or CB (which sounds like Seabee), thus the name.  It’s hard to compare this to any other movie because it hasn’t been done before or since.  But fans of John Wayne movies like “Back to Bataan” will enjoy it.  One of the Duke’s earlier films, there are parts of The Fighting Seabees that haven’t aged well.  If you overlook some of the cheesiness of it, you’ll enjoy it.  In the final battle, we see the good guys using bulldozers and other construction equipment to fight the bad guys.  What’s not to like about that? 2.5 action rating

Firecreek

Picture
After 1970, westerns started getting weird.  Even though this film was made in 1968, it’s got a very 70’s feel to it.  I think you know what I mean.  Fans of classic westerns can recognize when they’re watching a movie that doesn’t have that classic feel to it.  I tried to like this movie because it’s the only movie starring Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda together.  (“How the West Was Won didn’t have the two together on screen).  The main complaint I have with this film is that it’s not much of an action movie.  The final gunfight is impressive, but I would compare this to a western like “Three Violent People” because the movie dies well, but doesn’t live well.  1.5 action rating

Fort Dobbs

Picture
See it – An ideal western from start to finish. And Clint Walker’s best starring role by a landslide.  Raiding Comanches force a mysterious stranger on the run to aid a woman and a young boy in a desperate attempt to reach the safety of Fort Dobbs.  Extremely entertaining, unexpectedly intriguing, and whole-heartedly satisfying. 5 action rating

For Whom the Bell Tolls

Picture
One of the greatest war/romance movies of all time.  This is not WWII, it’s actually the Spanish Civil War that took place in the 1930’s.  Gary Cooper stars in this tale of courage, self sacrifice, and the horrors of war.  It’s very long in parts but stick with it and you won’t be disappointed.  3 action rating.

The Frogmen

Picture
See it – One of the more fascinating WWII movies ever made, this is the story of an underwater demolition team.  Starring Richard Widmark, it follows the team as they go on various sabotage missions against the Japanese in the Pacific theater.  And don’t worry, there’s actually some fighting in this one to keep you action buffs happy.  It’s an interesting, old-fashioned, feel-good war movie, and the final mission to destroy an enemy sub pen ends the film with a splash. 3 action rating.

From Paris With Love

Picture
To watch or not to watch, that is the question.  This oftentimes cheesy spy movie would have been a lot better if it had been made in the 90’s.  John Travolta is hilarious, which doesn’t exactly help us take this movie any more seriously.  But you can’t go wrong with car chases and rocket launchers, and this movie is a lot of fun.  It just came out a decade too late.  3.5 action rating
